Talk:Exploring Your Own Conceptions of Teaching and Learning/Exercise 3

Learning is an acquired change in behaviour...as a result students act differently (how do people learn. Ralph Tyler). This would be true in cognitive, psychomotor or attitudinal training. The person must learn for themselves. One of the main roles of the trainer is to motivate students to change. Students will use a new skill or understand a concept if they can relate it to something they do in their work or normal life. Teaching students is about students achieving their goals and objectives. So sessions I would arrange for students are objective based. Teaching students is also about building confidence, helping them to develop respect for the team overcoming any fears they may have of the training environment. It is also about helping them to broaden their horizons. Students will have their own personal goals, passing the exams, delivering sessions, submitting a project and the more interesting, enjoyable and rewarding the learning environment is, better results will be achieved by the student. My philosophy in teaching is to treat the student with respect, never put them in a vulnerable position, never embarrass them particularly in front of their peers. Help them to achieve their potential. Respect reflects respect. The feedback from my training sessions are generally positive and the students would be aware that we do take cognisance of their of their feedback sheets. The team of practitioners whom I train are comfortable attending training. Their experience of training would be positive. As a trainer I feel that by creating educational goals for myself, I strive to increase my knowledge and skills base and therefore maintain my credibility before my colleagues and students.

My main goal as a teacher of Pre-hospital care is to ensure practitioners are safe and the gold standard of care is delivered to all who require their assistance. As an educator I believe I help to facilitate the transfer of knowledge and skills that results in a change of student attitudes. These changes assist the student to achieve the required standard of education and practice which enables them to accomplish their overall objectives. I provide a safe working environment for them to learn and practice, this inspires confidence and provides them with the opportunity to safely deal with the vast variety of pre-hospital situations encountered by practitioners on a daily basis. My primary role is to ensure a safe standard of practice is achieved thus enabling the practitioner to deliver the appropriate emergency pre-hospital care.
The relationships I try to achieve with my students are to be honest truthful and show respect for all; this hopefully will develop the element of trust between student and educator. I endeavour to create a positive atmosphere and good rapport with all hopefully creating a comfortable environment that will greatly enhance their learning experience.
The most important thing that I expect from my students is honesty and trust. They must communicate well with fellow students and teachers alike, demonstrate their willingness to participate in the educational process and show respect for all. Good communication skills are essential between student and educator and the assurance of confidentiality should help to alleviate any fears that student may have regarding their participation in the educational programme.
I know a teaching session has been successful when the knowledge skills and attitude of students have changed. These can be assessed through objective and subjective assessments at various stages throughout the programme. They may be formal or informal, completed internally or externally by the various regulatory or governing organisations. Revision at regular intervals will help to clarify and consolidate the learning.
The values that I seek to impart to my students are to maintain excellent work ethics through knowledge acquisition and practical experience. I expect them to be honest and truthful in ensuring they create a safe working environment for all. Practitioners are expected to highlight to their colleagues the importance of delivering the appropriate care in a manner which is safe for patient and provider. Effective teaching is to facilitate and create active learning by empowering students to take some ownership of their own education. Students must be provided with the equipment and resources to facilitate their education in acquiring the new knowledge and skills which will enable them to achieve positive results. To teach, effectively learning must occur, it must be active social and contextual plus elements of reflection must take part at various stages throughout the process. When the educator draws from his own experience by providing examples he may provide a better understanding of what is to be achieved plus this activity may also help to motivate the students. Providing assurance of student confidentially should inspire confidence and allay any fears the student may conceal throughout the experience. The facilitator should set goals for all students during their education; these should be achievable and smart. Simple, Measurable, Action-based, Realistic and Time limited. In my position as an instructor problem based learning plays a huge role in student education. It provides an opportunity where students are continuously challenged, constantly rethinking, developing new strategies and concepts in order to achieve the desired effect. By working actively with your students, treating them equally and addressing them appropriately the educator will gain their confidence and respect. Educators have a responsibility to motivate their students by influencing them in a variety of ways. They must plan meticulously and use a variety of teaching methodologies to stimulate learning. When a good facilitator provides a safe and rich learning environment the experience will be pleasant plus have long term effects with positive results for all. Good listening and communication skills are essential plus a little sense of humour, all are required to ensure the learning experience is effective and enjoyable.
For myself teaching provides me with an opportunity for continuous learning and development. By partaking in the “Becoming a Better University Teacher” programme I intend to acquire many new skills that will enable me to enhance the educational experience I have enjoyed in the past. It is my wish to become a full time educator working within a student based centre assisting the growth and development of our future student practitioners. I hope to provide them with many opportunities to broaden their knowledge and develop their skills thereby assisting them to achieve their full potential.
