In addition to the more abstract concept societal demands for accountability and the influence this may have on module development, more immediate drivers for change includes the process of external validation or professional accreditation of courses.

Professional bodies require evidence that their pre-determined criteria are fulfilled and that students completing the associated programme have developed the requisite skills and abilities necessary for effective and successful functioning in the given professional field.
