Scholarship of Teaching Module Descriptor

Session Description:

Participants will explore the current conceptions of teaching and learning in Higher Education but, in particular, ideas surrounding teaching as a form of scholarship and its relation to other forms of scholarship in a higher education setting. (McCarthy & Higgs 2005; Andresen 2000.) They will review and analyse how the lessons from research into effective teaching and learning may inform and enhance practice.


Session Outcomes: By the end of this session you should be able to:

1. Critique current conceptions of the “scholarship of teaching” and “reflective practice”.

2. Use the literature on of the “scholarship of teaching” and “reflective practice” to inform a critically self-review your own conceptions of teaching and learning.

3. Use the literature on of the “scholarship of teaching” and “reflective practice” to critique your own decisions or those of others in the role of teacher and / or curriculum planner and / or educational manager.
